“Father Coyote” in Passengers Journal.

I, Caleb Sarvis, have a story in the December 2023 issue of Passengers Journal. It’s my second one published this year, which feels pretty good. This is also the first time a story of mine was read/recorded by someone else.

“Father Coyote” is the third of a series of stories told by the same narrator. The one that precedes this one is titled “Reaching for a Signal” and can be found at Joyland.

This one was loosely inspired by the neighbors across the street; or rather the lack of neighbors across the street. The house is currently empty because nobody can afford the rent required to live there, which the owner keeps high because they are trying to keep a certain kind of family out.

It’s a bit unsettling, because we’re not that kind of neighborhood. Or at least, I hope we’re not.

Behind all of us is a section of preserved woods, and while I haven’t seen any coyotes here, I did see one trotting around the parking lot of my old condo spot just around the corner about 5 years ago. They’ve only built more since then, so hopefully this story by me, Caleb Sarvis, captures that sideways feeling of wild animals feeling displaced by suburbia.

Anyway, hope you enjoy. More to come soon, hopefully.
